ROMA Tang Soo Do, established in 2023, offers traditional Korean martial arts training for children (ages 6+), teens, and adults. Our curriculum focuses on developing strong foundational skills, discipline, respect, and self-confidence. Students learn Tang Soo Do techniques, forms, and self-defense, while also gaining physical fitness and mental focus. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced martial artist, ROMA provides a supportive environment to grow and excel. We’ve been dedicated to changing the lives of people one person at a time, through martial arts, education and coaching. We strive to provide a safe, comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for all students and family members. Dr.Oster began his formal martial arts journey in 1973. In 1974, he joined the Western Michigan University Karate Club and became an active member of the United States Korean Karate Association (USKKA), earning a spot on their elite demonstration team. His passion and skill led him to begin teaching as an assistant instructor for the WMU Physical Education Department, eventually leading full Tang Soo Do and Karate PE classes.
In 1976, Dr. Oster earned his 1st Degree Black Belt and received his Instructor Certification the same year. He went on to teach martial arts for multiple local organizations and operated a commercial karate studio until relocating in 1978.
That same year, his teaching continued at Michigan State University, and he earned his 2nd Degree Black Belt. In 1982, he achieved his 3rd Degree Black Belt. After moving to the Chicago area to pursue a doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Dr. Oster formed a Tang Soo Do club with his fellow doctoral students. Between 1986 and 1992, he also taught at a local park district martial arts program.
In 2010, Dr. Oster began advanced training with Master Instructors in the World Tang Soo Do Association (WTSDA). Since then, he has become a Certified Instructor and Certified International Judge, actively participating in local and regional Tang Soo Do events and continuing to train and mentor students.
As of 2025, Dr. Oster celebrates 52 years of martial arts training and instruction, with a rich legacy in Tang Soo Do, Karate, and martial arts education.
Outside of martial arts, Dr. Oster is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with a part-time private practice. He resides in Bloomingdale, Illinois, with his wife, Pamela Russell.
Master Pamela Russell – 4th Degree Master in Tang Soo Do and Hapkido with Over 36 Years of Martial Arts Experience
Master Pamela Russell began her formal martial arts training in 1987, studying both Tang Soo Do and Hapkido. With over 36 years of experience, she has trained under numerous Master Instructors within the World Tang Soo Do Association (WTSDA), developing expertise in both traditional Korean martial arts.
In 2006, Master Russell earned her 1st Degree Black Belt in both Tang Soo Do and Hapkido. She continued advancing, earning her 2nd Degree Black Belt in Hapkido in 2011, and in Tang Soo Do, her 2nd Degree in 2008, 3rd Degree in 2012, and 4th Degree in 2020. In April 2025, she achieved the prestigious title of 4th Degree Master in Tang Soo Do.
A dedicated member of the World Tang Soo Do Association since 1991, Master Russell is a Certified Instructor and Certified International Judge. She has actively competed in Regional Tang Soo Do Championships, winning the Senior Cup Grand Champion title in 2011, and has also represented at the WTSDA World Championships. She continues to judge and support WTSDA events, including the bi-annual World Championships and U.S. Nationals.
Master Russell began teaching in 2000 as an Assistant Instructor and became a full Tang Soo Do Instructor in 2006. She has taught students of all ages and skill levels and has served as an instructor at local, regional, and international WTSDA events. She has also been a visiting martial arts instructor at WTSDA schools across the United States and Central America.
Outside of martial arts, Master Russell has a strong background in education and technology. She worked as a Teacher’s Assistant in the Villa Park School District while earning her Bachelor of Science in Education from Elmhurst College. She later received an MBA in Information Systems from Roosevelt University. Currently, she is the Senior Director of Managed Services at True Group Inc.
Master Russell resides in Bloomingdale, Illinois, with her husband, Dr. Marc Oster.
